    Hi, Scotty!

I'd look to the source for those answers, either AM phone, or the GPA 'bay Store.

Somebody's gonna have to find out if Bill's overcome his aversion to email sometime anyway...tho you gotta give him credit for bucking the flow 'way longer than any of us did... forums

This is far from my area of expertise, but i just wanted to point out that the new ferrite versions of 515 and 416 from GPA are likely a big improvement over the first original ferrites and NOT just simple copies of what was being made 25 years ago.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but haven't the GPA versions been refined with up to date technology/knowledge including things like shorting rings and better field focusing to render performance closer to that of the alnico motors?

I re-capped and coild my N801-8A crossovers with Jantzen parts from PE, they came out great and, they sound great, enjoy the pics, Dave.

PS - I had to add aluminum strips inside the covers because the covers were affecting the inductance of the coils.

Bill was REALLY sick all last week - only got into the office Friday, and then he should have been at home.

He should be there tomorrow - so give him a call.

Incidentally, he's building ALNICO models of the 515 now, along with some other interesting models, and, yes, they ARE improvements over the Altec models.

I ordered a pair of brand new GPA 416-8C,s from Bill. Ill run em for a few days, and then proceed with the rest!

Guess Ill have to put the Crown DC-300A,s back in service? They make some bass through Altec woofers.

    Hi, Scotty,

Considering the 416's modest power requirements in a horn loaded reflex cab, amp choices are broader than many others. Once you've met the requirements for unclipped transients at peak ratings, matching the amp's true output impedance to the driver/cab (DF) can optimize performance. In stock configuration, most modern amps actually overdamp high-BL Altec drivers.

Here's a good paper I found on the damping aspect. It gives enough detail for a tekky to measure and optimize most applications.

Yeah, that's a good one that's been on one site or another for as long as I've been on-line: http://www.paulspeltz.com/tomcik/index.html

All this has been well known since the beginning of speaker system design, but apparently this was the first time it was presented to the general public.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No, the 515B has a much lower Fs, Qts, ergo has much more design flexibility.
